The Chao Gong is an elegant and distinctive gong, producing a full and sustained wash of musical overtones. Its traditional appearance makes it a centerpiece for any space, indoors or outdoors. This style of gong dates from the Han Dynasty, historically used for spiritual drumming, large meetings, and announcing important processions. Today, the chao gong, also known as a tam-tam, is found in various music genres, including symphony orchestras. It features a distinctive 'target' appearance and a rim around the outside edge, differentiating it from a wind gong. Crafted from a bronze alloy (approximately 80% copper and 20% tin), its creation involves hand hammering and working the bronze on a lathe with careful heating and cooling. The center spot and outside rim retain the black copper oxide, while the rest of the surface is polished. Chao gongs are available in a range of sizes, with each size having its own distinct full sound. Smaller sizes have a rich but higher sound while the larger sizes are deeper and ring with more power and sustain.
